Fall 2019 Events

Here are some fun opportunities to connect with PCM friends:

Ongoing: PCM Book Group–click here for more information!

PCM Community Thanksgiving Luncheon – Sunday, November 24, right after the service. This is a favorite annual tradition for the PCM Community. Members of our local governing board will bring turkey and all the trimmings for a meal in the Founders’ Room immediately after our service. Friends are welcome!

Save These Dates, Too!  PCM’s Service Retreat will be the last week of winter break. January 11-18 (or 19) 2020. We’ll travel to Puerto Rico to help in the ongoing efforts to clean up after Hurricane Maria. Last week we held an information meeting, but if you were not able to make it, talk with Taryn and ask for the Information Sheet and Registration Form. Payment and forms must be submitted by Wednesday, Dec. 6. Even if you’re just thinking about coming, please get in touch with Taryn so that we’re sure to send you updates.

Look for more PCM events to be posted here, soon!

Here is what we did earlier this semester:

Spirit of Cornell–11-1 on Friday August 30, in front of Anabel Taylor Hall.  Spirit of Cornell is an annual open house showcasing the different offerings of Cornell United Religious Work (of which PCM is an affiliated chaplaincy).

Saturday, September 14, 10am–Trip to Ithaca Farmers’ Market and Gorge Walk in Treman Park.

Sunday, September 15, 1-4 pm at Barton Hall–Clubfest. This is an annual showcase of the hundreds of student organizations at Cornell, of which PCM is one!

Friday, September 20–Welcome Back Student Dinner at First Congregational Church of Ithaca.  Protestant communities at both Cornell and Ithaca College were invited to dinner with the congregation.

FMSC Mobile Pack–Friday, September 27, 5:30-7:30 pm.  FMSC (Feed My Starving Children) is an annual Ithaca program involving church and community groups.   Over the course of a long weekend, tens of thousands of meals are packed to be sent to refugee camps and disaster relief centers all over the world. It’s a PCM tradition to gather for dinner together before our shift and go out for ice cream after.

Wednesday, October 2, 9am-2pm in the Willard Strait Memorial Room: “A Peace of My Mind.” Artist and peace activist John Nolter and a group of CURW affiliates (including PCM!), hosted a photo studio centered on the question: “What brings meaning to your life?”  Students stopped by the event at Willard Strait Hall to write a 24 word response and have their portraits taken by this renowned photographer.  The result will be a slideshow of faces and thoughts reflecting our collective search for meaning.  Click here for more information about Nolter and his work.

October 3, 7-8:30 pm, “Welcoming the Stranger: Immigrant Farmworkers in New York State,” a program by Mary Joe Dudley, Director of the Cornell Farmworker Program, hosted by the Forest Home Chapel.

Sunday, October 20,  “How the Light Gets In” is the title of a special exhibit at the Johnson Art Museum, focused on the movement of people across the globe and the welcome cracks that develop in our notions of borders and nation states – “that’s how the light gets in,”  Leonard Cohen sang in his song, “Anthem.”

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in.

Carol Hockett, the Program Director of the Johnson, is a longtime friend of the PCM community and a lay preacher in the United Methodist Church.  She was our guide as we explored this deeply thought-provoking collection of art about migration.

Faith Hop!

On Sunday, November 17, PCM welcomed visitors at our 11 AM service.  For more information about the Faith Hop, see the PCM Facebook page, or PCM announcements at worship.
